Bilge Pump: December 2008

1. Commodore’s Report

Bilge Pump Issue:
December 2008

Commodore Dale RobertsThe month of December can be a hectic time for many of us, yet it’s also a special time of year, and sometimes we’re too busy to take time to enjoy its simple pleasures. December at Queen City Yacht Club offers many social and benevolent activities. Hopefully, you’ll find time to partake in many of them. A long standing tradition is the Tarette Captain’s Dinner, and this year it is on December 4th. Susie and I have gone to this event every year since we joined Queen City, and have always had a splendid time. Next, on December 7th, is the Special Peoples Cruise. Captain Bill Field is the event Chairman and in conjunction with Seafair, the event sponsor, our members make available their boats for a cruise on Lake Washington in which some of our less fortunate citizens are treated to an afternoon of Christmas cheer and get a chance to meet Santa. If you haven’t participated in this event yet, it is truly an uplifting time for all. It is also a great way for our members to give something back to the community.

On December 12th and 13th, Queen City Yacht Club hosts the Chet Gibson Memorial Christmas Cruise, also known as the Lighted Boat Parade. This event is another long standing tradition, dating back to the 40’s. Randy Jamerson is the event Chairman this year and he promises a good time for all. Also on the 13th, Sandy Werner is putting on the Children’s Christmas Party, always a popular affair the little ones. Just before Christmas, on December 22nd, our Fleet Captain, Don Wilson will be hosting an evening cruise on an Argosy vessel that will feature “Jazz with Deems Tsuatakawa.” Finally, New Year’s Eve will offer our annual gala, with dinner by our caterer, Willie Williamson, and dancing to The Tropics. P/C Dick Graddon and Donna, and Larry and Lynette Richards are the hosts.

I’d like to thank Captain Butch Scherrer for chairing the Scotch, Steak and Cigar Night last month. The Fleet Captain’s Apple Cup Cruise to Kingston Cove Yacht Club was another event enjoyed by many of our members. It’s fun to have a reason to get out on the water during an otherwise dismal time of year.

Congratulations to our Predicted Log Racers. Captain Dave Padgett was the overall winner of the Port Orchard Yacht Club Fall Roundup, Captain Bill Anderson was the winner of the QCYC Flag Officers’ Race, and P/C Dean Lentgis was the 2008 Skipper of the Year for Queen City.

Finally, I’ll end with a few odds and ends: Mike Dorgan, one of the hardest working amongst us at the club, was made an Honorary Member at the October Board of Trustees meeting. It is a well deserved accolade for a deserving person in the Queen City family. Roger Courson and Kathy Fish have been busy organizing and selling advertising for the 2008-2009 Annual, and their efforts should be recognized by all of us.

May you all have a wonderful holiday season!

2. Vice Commodore's Report

Bilge Pump Issue:
December 2008

I trust you all had a healthy and happy Thanksgiving. It’s hard to believe the Holiday Season is upon us. Elaine and I want to wish each of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! We look forward to celebrating with you in the various holiday happenings around the Club.

While we have lots of fun-filled activities to look forward to in December, various work projects are also in the mix. First, let me give a well-deserved round of thanks to our Dock Chairs Art Mauldin, Dave Svendsen, and Randy Garvie and the many people who helped with the important docks inspections. This project has resulted in an excellent survey of the immediate needs required to maintain our docks and to plan the work sequencing with Waterfront Construction. Maintaining our docks is a critical component to our continuing success as a Club and it’s also a never-ending project—well beyond the available time of our volunteer Dock Chairs. So, they really need your help with a few projects. They’re reasonably simple projects but we need several people to take ownership of one or two of the projects, get a couple of friends to help and get the projects done. As members, if we don’t pitch-in we’ll be forced to pay outside contractors to do the work at a considerably higher cost. Please volunteer. Contact Art Mauldin or Dave Svendsen and they can get you started and provide guidance.

We’ve begun cleaning out unnecessary items from the Clubhouse and approved projects are underway on the third deck for the conference/meeting room concept. This will involve a few space-appropriate tables for use by our many committees, the Tarettes and the Tuesday bridge players as well as better lighting and a fresh coat of paint. We have limited space so it’s important that we use our space wisely and maintain it appropriately. We are considering selling the piano since it is so seldom used and takes up space. If you are interested in purchasing it, let me know.

There seems to be a noticeable increase in the number of flyers posted on windows, doors and other stationary objects around the Clubhouse. While we appreciate your desire to drum up attendance at our Club events, we also want to keep the Club neat and attractive. There are bulletin boards available for use through the Office, there are table top flyer holders, there’s The Bilge Pump, the web site, etc., etc. We have a beautiful facility—let’s keep it that way!

As you know, we have Jerry Zuvich to thank for getting the crane operational in the “U.” Kudos also go to Jim Damery for making the crane even more accessible. Jim has put together a red toolbox, located in Cummings Hall, with all the tools needed to operate the crane. The tool box contains: the crane control cable, electrical extension cord, weight indicator, attachment cables, and The instruction manual. Please return the box and its contents to Cummings Hall after use so it’s ready for the next Captain to use. Great job, Jim! Your many and continuing efforts on behalf of the Club are greatly appreciated.

I’ve been working closely with Kathy Fish, the Architectural Advisory Committee, and our Outstation Chair to give Winslow a bit of a face-lift. The Outstation has seen 40 years of continuous use and it’s starting to show. The Tarettes will be contributing an electric fireplace and a flat screen TV (and perhaps even more surprises), we’ll also be adding some additional shelving and storage space, improving the lighting, and adding a splash of paint—all with the intent of maintaining the “feel” of the Outstation while protecting our assets and enhancing the “Winslow experience.”

In closing, just a few reminders: the Reciprocal Dock is for use by reciprocal clubs only unless specifically approved in advance by the Bridge; tarps are not permitted as a covering for your boat; with Winter storms upon us, please check that your mooring lines are secure. Thanks for your cooperation.

As you can see, there’s a lot going on. I’ll keep you posted as things continue to develop.

Fair Winds,

Ed Jennerich

3. Rear Commodore's Report

Bilge Pump Issue:
December 2008

What a busy club. Nancy and I attended our new commodore’s ball, which was really a fun event and I recommend everyone go to the next one. We attended Bremerton and Everett’s Junior Officer’s Balls, went to New Hampshire for a week (leaves, lobster and moose), attended AAC, Planning and Finance and Board meetings. After attending these meetings I realize this club has a lot of terrific people paying close attention to the current and future finances, condition of the grounds and docks while keeping the fun level high.

I spent a Saturday morning moving boats around, watching Dave Svendsen’s dock crew (Art Mauldin supervising) while they floated around in a dinghy under the docks checking the condition of pilings, piling caps, cross beams, connectors, etc. They lay on their backs while dirt and spiders cascaded down onto their faces and clothes so that a list of repairs can be compiled, thank you for this effort. This is just one example of the efforts of our members. Come be a part of the continued tradition of “many hands make small work” and attend the many functions this club sponsors. We would love to see you.

Grounds – We did such a good job on the September cleanup that we don’t have to do it again until February. Mark your calendars early so we can tune the grounds up in only a couple of hours. There are only a couple of hours of light during the day in February and you might as well be outside with your friends. Maybe we’ll get Willie to make us hot soup or chowder for lunch.

Security – New contact lists are posted on the doors of the docks. Thanks, Jonelle. I have mentioned to a few of the extended-stay members that we have a need for a fire drill and they should be part of it. We’ll be looking for a date where we can check the hoses and see how wet we can get. Please contact me about this.

New parking rules have been adopted by the board. Parking in the northwest end of the main parking lot is actually part of the city’s property and extended parking there may generate a warning/ticket.

Membership – The Boat Show, The Boat Show, we’re going to the boat show! QCYC has a spanking new booth to put our club in front of potential new members at the show. Chris Benson has a few open slots for 4 hour shifts (we buy the ticket) and would like you to contact him. There is a signup sheet available at the general meeting. There will be an open house for potential new members developed at the show on Feb. 21, 2009, so you can get a free snack also. As I write this we have a new member, John Knickerbocker, who is being inducted at tonight’s general meeting. He already was caught helping Ragnar Schousboe with the Closing Day salmon cooking. Thanks for the help.
Ask your friends to join our club. We have a lot of fun.

Board Report

Bilge Pump Issue:
December 2008

I am eager and honored to serve as the Board Chairman for this year. So far this year (at the October and November Board Meetings) the Bridge, Board and Planning and Finance have been busy addressing many items, such as approval of the budget for the 2008/2009 year and approving updated rules /policies for the upcoming printing of the annual.

When looking forward at this year’s budget and combining it with last year’s expenditures, the club will have used approximately $300k from the club’s contingency reserve fund to perform critical repairs on our docks at the in-station. Combining this year’s budget with last year’s expenditures, the club will be investing over $600k to perform critical repairs at the in-station and Winslow out-station docks. It is important that we keep our facilities in good repair, as these are the assets that make our club great, attractive to new members and ensure it will be around for future QCYC boating generations to enjoy.

I would like to remind all the members that we meet monthly and the meetings are open to the membership and that the meeting minutes are available online on our website.

Thank you

Mark Weiss
Board Chairman

Boat Winterizing Checklist

Bilge Pump Issue:
December 2008

As the fall leaves change color, it is time to make sure the necessary preparations are made to protect your yacht for the winter months. The time and effort spent winterizing your vessel will have a profound effect on the condition of your boat next spring. Ultimately, your investment now in this winterizing process will lessen the investment later on.

◊ Top off fuel tanks
◊ Clean and pump holding tank
◊ Check coolant for proper antifreeze
◊ Fill and charge batteries, switch off when not in use
◊ Close propane tank valves (if applicable)
◊ Check for working bilge pumps
◊ Remove any debris that could clog or interfere with bilge pumps
◊ Close all through-hulls, except cockpit drains; put a note at helm to open the through-hulls before starting the engine next season
◊ Check that all hose clamps are tight and that all through-hulls are double clamped
◊ If leaving your boat connected to shore power, firmly attach and secure power cord plugs and remove any existing corrosion
◊ Use only marine-approved heating devices when aboard
◊ Ensure that there are an adequate number of fenders of proper size and type
◊ Upgrade or add extra dock lines to provide chaffing protection
◊ Consider removing these items for dry storage:
     Tenders, motors and fuel
     Spare propane containers
     Ship’s papers
Bimini tops, sails and other canvas
     Canned food and personal items
     Unused or old equipment
◊ Leave interior locker doors open to ventilate
◊ Secure winter cover

Winter is closing in!

There will be a work party on Saturday, December 6, led by Dave Svendsen, and another on Saturday, January 10, led by Art Mauldin. Both work parties commence at 9:00 am, second deck in the clubhouse.

Project leaders are needed as are workers of many sorts.

Entertainment Night Wrap

Bilge Pump Issue:
December 2008

Wow what and event! Lupe and I can’t begin to thank all of you enough that helped with this year’s event. We could not have put this great event on without the talent, stage hands, film crew, Tarettes’ dinner crew and of course our QCYC audience. We had approximately 215 people for dinner and we estimate around 240 for the show which was a record turnout. By the time you are reading this article we should have the DVD’s back and there should be a few the extras for those that have not ordered them that will be available from the QCYC Ship’s Stores.

I would like to remind all the members that next year’s event will be on Friday, September 18, 2009. Look for our talent scouts that are busy recruiting for next year!

Thank you
