Docks Committee Report
Bilge Pump Issue:
July 2009
ATTENTION: GO BOATING! Help the Docks Committee! GO BOATING! July 15 brings us to the last phase to the roof tear-down and re-covering project. The roofing company actually starts Monday, July 20. The project should last no more than two weeks. The process happens to the second and fourth roof units on Dock #1. It directly involves everyone with slip numbers less than about #147, and it involves everyone else in that we need available slips for many boats.
For the duration of the project (About 7/17 – 7/29 or so) insurance issues require the evacuation of:
Slips: 115 through 126
Slips: 133 through 142
And all odd number slips from 111 through 141 (the south side of Dock 1)
Boats in slips 112, 114, 128, 130, 132, 143, 144, 145, & 147, should be able to remain in their slips, but be aware that your vessels may get dirty in this process.
If your slip number is on the evacuation list, the Docks Committee will be in touch. If you can make arrangements to move your boat prior to July 17 it will be very greatly appreciated. We are not looking forward to towing any of these larger boats. If you moor elsewhere in the marina and your slip will be available, please call Jonelle at the club office, 206-709-2000, and report the slip number and dates it is available. Contacts for this job are Chuck Gould at 206-605-6744 and Art Mauldin at 206-322-5289.
Work parties are set for: 7/11, 8/8, and 9/12. We meet at 9 AM during the summer (7/11 & 8/8) as there is no food service. Committee meetings are scheduled for the fourth Tuesday of each month: June 23, July 28, August 25, and September 22, except that this Docks Chairman is conscripted for mandatory boating during the August and September meetings. Please: make them happen without me! Originally, the meetings were scheduled for the last Tuesday of the month, but the club’s calendar creator wasn’t smart enough to handle that. The meeting is set for 6 PM. Remember the second Saturday and the fourth Tuesday.
The Fire Code required draft curtain project is now becoming a reality and a priority project. Bring your simple wood working skills and let’s develop mass production techniques for a job that will require some 670 - 2x4s and 140 sheets of plywood. Project development has been in the hands of John Alving, but it needs to transition into production phase and a team or two with their own leaders will be needed to carry on with getting this job done. We’ve got a nice list of new tools to get purchased for this project. You could get your hands un-dirtied with first use!
Smaller maintenance projects are always in plentiful supply, and can be relied upon to be behind schedule. The Docks Committee very much needs a few a people to carry on with these matters. Dave Svendsen has been our man for several years but his involvement will soon be greatly reduced.
Lastly, I’m attempting to prepare a presentation about the Fire Code Compliance Project for general meetings starting with June 24. It’s important that you understand what is coming, its size and impact and you should have a chance to understand why this is being done. It’s all so dramatic and it’s important that we all understand because we can become aligned in our support for these big projects. On June 24 I’ll try to address the list of requirements in general and the standpipe project very specifically. I hope to see you there.
