Bilge Pump: July/August 2009

1. Commodore's Report

Bilge Pump Issue:
July 2009

Commodore Dale Roberts

As I sit down to write this article, it dawns on me that this is the 32nd article I’ve composed during the three years I’ve progressed through the chairs at Queen City Yacht Club. If you have read my articles, I thank you. The articles written by the Bridge, Board and Committee Chairs are the chief way we have to communicate to the members the business of the club. The articles are also the main way we have to acknowledge the fine things that that our members have done for the club. Bill Field’s efforts as editor of The Bilge Pump have ensured that our club distributes a quality publication that is not only read by our members, but other Yacht Clubs and our advertisers.

If you weren’t able to attend “Survivor Winslow” at the Outstation over Memorial Day Weekend, you missed quite an event! Mark and Lynn Vanderwall, with Chris and Barb Castrow chaired the event. Their creativity and hard work turned it into an affair that nearly everyone there participated in one way or another, with a very multifaceted set of games that culminated with Karin Grimm winning the grand finale on Sunday. On Memorial Day morning, our Fleet Chaplain, Ken Klett, produced another moving ceremony honoring those who have sacrificed for our country. I would like to thank all of those who had a hand in making it such a memorable event.

Two other social events occurred in May: Scotch, Steak and Cigar Night, was scaled back but still provided a wonderful evening of fun for those who attended. Jess Hill, Kyle Bixby and our caterer, Willie, made it all happen. The next event was the “Return of the Snowbirds” Friday Night Social, hosted by Diane and Bob Prestebak. Their crew put on a delicious spaghetti dinner that was enjoyed by all.

In June, the annual “Old Timer’s Night” was hosted by Steve Swingler with P/C Lynn Montgomery providing Likely Lady for a cruise around the ship canal. Thirty-four “old timers” went on the cruise, ate dinner and then attended the meeting. As near as I could tell, they all had a great time. As a Bridge Officer, I’ve attended the last three years and have really enjoyed myself. But now I will have to wait eighteen years before I become an “old timer” and can participate again! Also in June was the third annual “Tequila and Tacos Night,” hosted by Kyle and Traci Bixby and other family members. As usual, this was another excellent event and we should all thank them for continuing such a fine tradition.

As usual, the mainstation clubhouse will be fairly quiet this summer, but many other opportunities, mostly waterborne, are available for members and their guests. These include the 4th of July Celebration Cruise to the Outstation, numerous Fleet Captain’s events, the Fleet Captain’s Cruise in mid August and the Labor Day Cruise to the Outstation on September 5th-7th. I hope you will consider attending as many of these as possible.

Finally, I’d like to end by noting a milestone that Susie and I have reached as your Commodore and First Lady. Last night was our fourteenth and final Commodore’s Ball.

It has been a delight to represent Queen City Yacht Club at the Commodore’s Balls of the Grand XIV Yacht Clubs of Puget Sound. Our goal was to attend all of them, and we achieved that goal. We enjoyed every ball, and over the last three years have made some great friendships amongst our Grand XIV counterparts. That alone makes it all worthwhile.

2. Vice Commodore's Report

Bilge Pump Issue:
July 2009

Summer is upon us. The beautiful weather we’ve had the past several weeks has me anxious to go cruising. I hope your summer plans will include visits to our outstations and reciprocals throughout Puget Sound, not to mention the Fleet Captain’s summer cruise to Desolation Sound. Wherever you travel, I hope you have a safe and wonderful summer of boating.

Speaking of outstations, the Board of Trustees has decided to have fees at all outstations set at $8.00 per night. All other rules as stated in the Annual are unchanged and remain in effect. The deck furniture at Winslow has seen better days. Depending on which seat you choose, you can either get your bottom pinched or your pants wet! They have served us well but they need to be replaced and new ones should be arriving toward the end of July. We’ll need help getting them unloaded and set up, so if you’re at Winslow when the truck arrives please volunteer to lend a hand. Barbara will be grateful!

In order to help our Treasurer with his heavy workload, the Board also approved a full-time office manager position. This position will provide accounting/bookkeeping support for the treasurer and will also manage the work of the office. The office needs have reached a point where a part-time person is no longer able to provide the needed help. A screening committee composed of the Treasurer, Board Chair and Vice Commodore will be reviewing applications over the next several weeks. If you know of anyone who might be interested, have them contact vicecommodore@queencity.org

The roofs on Dock 1 will be replaced beginning July 20th. If you are moored in the affected areas, the Docks Committee will need your help in relocating to another slip. A better idea would be to go cruising and enjoy the beauty of our local waters while at the same time lessening the burden on the Docks Committee. These are the last covers that need to be replaced and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation. This has been a major, multi-year project led by Docks Committee Chair, Art Mauldin. He’s done a wonderful job and deserves a “well done” next time you see him! Since no good deed goes unpunished, Art has also been working on our Fire Code Compliance projects. As you know, this is a time-sensitive, mega-project. We have until the end of Sept. 2014 to complete new fire standpipes, draft curtains, roof smoke/fire vents, etc. The Docks Committee could use additional volunteers to take the lead and/or help with these projects. The draft curtains, in particular, can be done by the members, thus saving us from having to hire a contractor. Please give Art a call to volunteer.

I look forward to seeing many of you at Winslow for the Fourth of July celebration and cruise. Hopefully, I’ll also see some of you while we’re out cruising—you’ll probably be passing me!

Fair Winds,

Ed Jennerich

3. Rear Commodore's Report

Bilge Pump Issue:
July 2009

If you went to the outstation over Memorial Day you saw the results of our Vice Commodore (Ed and Elaine Jennerich) and his woodworking partner (P/C Dick Timmerman). Wow, what an improvement! Even Eric Wood likes it. Memorial Day (Survivor) Weekend was a lot of fun. B dock was the Elale Tribe (blue headband) pummeling the losing A Dock (orange headband)? Tribe. There were lots of activities for all age groups, beautiful weather, good food, an evening beach fire with marshmallows, decorated tiki torches and all so well done by Mark and Lynn Vanderwall. Their group of helpers kept the club hopping. If you missed it put it on the calendar for next year.

Grounds – Just one month after the Pride of Queen City and the weeds are making a strong comeback. If you’re around the club for a little while this summer grab a tool and a bucket and grab a handful of weed. Contact Linda Roehl for additional information. I see a few new flowers being added. The club looks great with the color. With summer being the time the parking lot will be the fullest, please remember not to park outside of the marked spaces and have your parking tag in your (1) vehicle. Please don’t use the handicapped parking spots for long-term parking: it’s a great benefit to all who need the access.

Security – There was a break-in, by water, in one of our boats on dock 1, over Opening Day weekend. The boat was unlocked and some items are missing. If you see anyone suspicious call the police. They are more than glad to come and solve the problem. Rod Hilden is our Chairperson to contact with any concerns or questions and Scott Grimm is assisting, so copy them with any concerns.

Membership – Summer cruising is when you will meet new boaters. We always have openings for new members, even from other clubs. Arrange to have them come see what we have to offer and don’t be afraid to ask them to join. Welcome Aboard to our new members. If I don’t remember your name (I usually remember faces pretty well) come and say hi and I will introduce you to whoever is around. Volunteering is a also great way to meet the other members. I found that helping with one of the Friday Night Socials or an outstation event puts you in front of a hundred new friends. Don’t forget the $1,000 raffle for those who sponsor a new member this year and remember our Vice Commodore’s (Ed Jennerich) famous saying, “The number one reason people don’t join an organization is that they aren’t asked,” so ask.

We are a first class organization, our fellow Grand 14 clubs think we’re great, so be proud to fly your burgee and have fun cruising.

Andrews Bay Wagon Wheel

Bilge Pump Issue:
July 2009

July 17 -19 Andrews Bay Wagon Wheel with
Queen City Yacht Club and Rainier Yacht Club

Four of the largest boats will be designated in advance to act as Anchor Boats. The Anchor Boats will meet Friday afternoon and once set will be ready to accept boats into the formation later in the afternoon. Full instructions will be given to each participant once we know who you are. No motors inside the wheel. We will have swimmers in the middle. Individual boaters will do their own meals, snacks & drinks.
Saturday between 4PM & 5PM Drink Dinghies will go around the inside of the circle and give out FREE drinks (Cosmos & Margaritas) and sell raffle tickets. The sale of tickets will hopefully offset the cost of the drinks.
This promises to be a FUN & EXCITING event with an opportunity to do an activity with a sister yacht club and meet new people. Lets show our Club Spirit and participate in large numbers.

We need a Boat count no later than July 12th, with
the name & length of boat and, of course, the name
and e-mail contact of the Captain.

Board Report

Bilge Pump Issue:
July 2009

The Board of Trustees would like to thank all who participated in the recent By-Law amendment voting and for the confidence, support and trust shown by the membership in passing all five of the by-law amendments.

The Planning and Finance Committee, Bridge and Board are working together on a budget for the 2009-10 year that will allow funding of critical projects around the club. These projects involve the Stand-Pipes portion of the Fire Code Compliance project and additional replacement of Winslow Dock B.

At the June meeting the Board revisited the overnight fees at our out stations and instation. After considerable discussion, the Board approved that overnight fees at the “U” at the instation, the Guest Dock, and all outstation moorages shall be $8.00 per night to all Club members, effective July 1, 2009. It should be noted that the July billing will be at the $10 rate, which represents the period prior to July 1. The October billing will be at the new $8 rate which represents the period after July 1. The electrical fee for reciprocal moorage remains unchanged at $4 per night.

I would encourage all members to go on line to the QCYC website and review the Board meeting minutes and attend the Board meetings which are open to all members and held on the second Monday of every month, except July and August, at 7 PM.

Club Manager Report

July 2009

Pop Machine
We as a club just voted in a by-law change to increase our dues. Though no one enjoys most any increase in cost, sometimes it is necessary. We have enjoyed the absolute lowest pop machine price of $ .50 for a long time. It is now time for an increase to $ .75, as our product cost has gone up for a couple of reasons. We have been purchasing our pop at Sam’s Club by way of myself driving there and purchasing pop and bringing it back to the club. Sam’s Club has begun the process of phasing out some of their 12 oz. can items and going to larger plastic bottles which will not work in our pop machine. It’s gotten to the point that sometimes I have had to travel to the Aurora store to find they do not have the needed item in stock and then, drive all the way to the Renton store and sometimes being lucky enough to find the product in stock and other times not. The other problem is Sam’s new computer system. It will not properly recognize our re-sale status. Every time I visit Sam’s I have to spend 30 – 40 minutes straightening out the problem. Aside from no product, this has become way too time consuming.

We have decided to purchase pop product from the Pepsi-Cola & Coca Cola companies. We could have leased a new, bigger machine from one of the two companies but, we would have to stock only that company’s product. An assessment was made that our current machine, owned by QCYC, will last a number more years. We will simply purchase directly from Pepsi-Cola & Coca-Cola and they will deliver. We will be able therefore to stock product sold by both companies in our machine. The only difference in product will be after current supplies run out, Sprite and Sprite Zero will replace 7 up and Diet 7 up. Instead of A & W Root Beer, we will stock Mug Root Beer.

The reason for the increase in price believe it or not is that, by purchasing directly from the manufacturer rather than Sam’s Club, depending on quantities ordered, our per can price increases from $ .18 to $ .31 per can.

Friday Lunch
Though our Club Chef Willie Williamson has decided not to offer Saturday brunch during the months of July & August, he has elected to continue Friday lunch service during those two normally slow months. We will in conjunction with Willie’s Friday lunch, keep the bar open during the months of July & August.

As an incentive to patronize the bar, we are going to have a variation of a raffle. Gary Stone donated a Dunato’s haulout gift certificate for any vessel up to 50 feet in length. The certificate expires on December 31, 2009. Beginning Friday, July 3rd, and continuing through Friday, August 28th, with the purchase of each bar beverage, you will be given one raffle ticket. The drawing will be held during the first September monthly meeting on September 9, 2009. YOU MUST BE PRESENT TO WIN!

Enjoy your summer!!!!!

Docks Committee Report

Bilge Pump Issue:
July 2009

ATTENTION: GO BOATING! Help the Docks Committee! GO BOATING! July 15 brings us to the last phase to the roof tear-down and re-covering project. The roofing company actually starts Monday, July 20. The project should last no more than two weeks. The process happens to the second and fourth roof units on Dock #1. It directly involves everyone with slip numbers less than about #147, and it involves everyone else in that we need available slips for many boats.

For the duration of the project (About 7/17 – 7/29 or so) insurance issues require the evacuation of:

Slips: 115 through 126
Slips: 133 through 142
And all odd number slips from 111 through 141 (the south side of Dock 1)
Boats in slips 112, 114, 128, 130, 132, 143, 144, 145, & 147, should be able to remain in their slips, but be aware that your vessels may get dirty in this process.

If your slip number is on the evacuation list, the Docks Committee will be in touch. If you can make arrangements to move your boat prior to July 17 it will be very greatly appreciated. We are not looking forward to towing any of these larger boats. If you moor elsewhere in the marina and your slip will be available, please call Jonelle at the club office, 206-709-2000, and report the slip number and dates it is available. Contacts for this job are Chuck Gould at 206-605-6744 and Art Mauldin at 206-322-5289.

Work parties are set for: 7/11, 8/8, and 9/12. We meet at 9 AM during the summer (7/11 & 8/8) as there is no food service. Committee meetings are scheduled for the fourth Tuesday of each month: June 23, July 28, August 25, and September 22, except that this Docks Chairman is conscripted for mandatory boating during the August and September meetings. Please: make them happen without me! Originally, the meetings were scheduled for the last Tuesday of the month, but the club’s calendar creator wasn’t smart enough to handle that. The meeting is set for 6 PM. Remember the second Saturday and the fourth Tuesday.

The Fire Code required draft curtain project is now becoming a reality and a priority project. Bring your simple wood working skills and let’s develop mass production techniques for a job that will require some 670 - 2x4s and 140 sheets of plywood. Project development has been in the hands of John Alving, but it needs to transition into production phase and a team or two with their own leaders will be needed to carry on with getting this job done. We’ve got a nice list of new tools to get purchased for this project. You could get your hands un-dirtied with first use!

Smaller maintenance projects are always in plentiful supply, and can be relied upon to be behind schedule. The Docks Committee very much needs a few a people to carry on with these matters. Dave Svendsen has been our man for several years but his involvement will soon be greatly reduced.

Lastly, I’m attempting to prepare a presentation about the Fire Code Compliance Project for general meetings starting with June 24. It’s important that you understand what is coming, its size and impact and you should have a chance to understand why this is being done. It’s all so dramatic and it’s important that we all understand because we can become aligned in our support for these big projects. On June 24 I’ll try to address the list of requirements in general and the standpipe project very specifically. I hope to see you there.

Late addition: Big thanks for the work party of June 13, 2009, that opened the
way toward starting our Draft Curtains Project. Participating: Bob
Prestebak, Steve Hansen, Jim Bailey, Owen Ashurst, Don Perkins,
Marv Elbon, Al Reiche, Jeff Purvis, Chuck Gould, Dave Svendsen,
Gary Johnson, Ron Voegeli, Janet Stannard, Gary Nelson, Rick
Anderson, Bill Stannard, Brian Barton, and Arthur Mauldin

Arthur Mauldin, Docks Chairman
Dave Svendsen, Assistant Docks Chairman
