Bilge Pump: June 2012
1. Commodore's Report

Opening Day – WOW, Opening Day 2012 was a GREAT event. The rain finally stopped and all activities were well attended. Captains Dale & Susie Roberts put together a terrific array of Opening Day events. Dinners started on Wednesday and continued through the weekend concluding with breakfast on Sunday morning. Bill & Judy Buller, Butch & Nancy Scherrer, Rich & Chris McCroskey, Ron & Carol Voegeli and Dean Lengtis and all of their teams really outdid themselves. Dinners were continually sold out! Way to go! The bar staff under the direction of Andy Gerde was smokin’ all weekend long. Queen City’s decorated boat won FIRST PLACE in the Novelty category in the parade. Thanks go to Captains Lynn & John Sipkens and Dave & Michelle Bedner along with the “cast of thousands” who spent long hours decorating and then riding along in the parade ( Zumba, Zumba, Zumba). Docks were full and the shuttle kept running and everyone had a good time. APPLAUSE to all of you!
The Oath of Membership for eligible spouses (prior to March 28, 2012) will be administered at all general membership meetings until the end of September. Bridge officers, when presented with the proper paper work (available from any bridge officer or the office), are able to administer the oath individually. A special oath administration will take place on Sunday, May 27th, at 11:00 AM at the Winslow outstation. Spouses, it is important to remember that you are not a member until you have actually taken the Oath of Membership. Until you do so, you do not qualify for rights of survivorship and privileges of membership.
Summer is almost here. Please remember as you leave for your various cruises throughout the summer to try to park as far away from the clubhouse as possible, leaving the spots closest to the clubhouse empty. Cars parked in the lot must have a current legal parking pass visible. We have over 400 members and 230 moorage slips. With only 90 parking spaces available, parking becomes an issue.
The Queen City JO Ball will take place this month on Saturday, June 16. This is your opportunity to honor your junior bridge officers for all of the hard work and time that they and their spouses put into our club. Please participate and attend this very fun evening. It is your chance to say thanks to your V/C Bob & Lois Stettner and R/C Bob & Laurean Myers.
The Bilge Pump will be published online commencing with the June issue. This will save the club a considerable amount of money. The June issue will both be mailed and published online but be aware that starting in October it will be published online only.
The club is still looking for 6 dedicated special persons to be dock captains. Dock captains will walk and inspect their docks on a regular basis. Contact Dick Dow at 425.868.0921 if you are interested in helping out with this important task.
June 9th Leukemia Cup Regatta Queen City sailors to participate – For questions or more information call Regatta Sail Chairman Pete Delauney -206.323.9128.
June 13 – “Old Timers” Cruise - 4:00 PM RSVP to Club Office by June 6th. - For questions or more information call Gerald Fey – 425.761.9659.
Summer starts this month as will the cruising season. Please be careful and have a great time.

2. Vice Commodore's Report
True to form, Opening Day was once again a huge success. One of the crowning accomplishments was that Captains Michele & Dave Bedner and their entire crew on Merleau were selected by the Opening Day judges as number #1, first place in their class competition. What a nice prize to bring back to QCYC. Thank you and congratulations to all of you! Of course we thank “Thor” for staying home and allowing the near perfect weather for Saturday and Sunday.

3. Rear Commodore's Report
On Opening Day 2012 it was such a pleasure to present our fine Main Station, facility, docks, grounds, food, participation and hospitality to the Seattle boating community. The place looked spectacular! Thank you to every single member who helped make this year the best ever! Even a 1st Place Cheeseburger! Boating Season is here!
Grounds:
How do you like the new red dock chairs…please enjoy! Hey while you’re sitting there, how about picking up the hose and watering the containers on the dock? Are you enjoying the flowers as you go through you dock door….how about watering those flower pots as you pass? Please help us keep the gardens beautiful through the summer. We have worked hard to put the right plant in the right spot & invested in many potted plants on all 3 docks, along the water edge parking, the U-dock and 2nd Deck Patio. They all require daily watering. Please adopt a pot and water with the nearest hose. Dock 3 containers have been adopted by Captains Linda Hill and Teri McGrew: thank you!
Refuse:
Summer is high use time at QCYC so please remember ordinary trash generated by QCYC members, boats and dogs should be placed in appropriate dumpsters. Disposal of trash generated off-site is prohibited. Thank you for recycling.
Membership:
Welcome aboard new captains Jared and Kathy Hickman.
To date our membership stands at 356 active members.
Security:
Opening Day security remains intact overall. A few too many non-member cars (11) were parked in the lot. However this is a QCYC member compliance issue. Red tag or towing is under discussion.
The pleasure of your company is requested at our QCYC Grand 14 Junior Officer’s Ball, June 16, 2012. Our theme is Grease. 1950’s attire is encouraged. Pink Ladies & T-Bird signature cocktails will be served in the Frosty Palace Diner. Dance music will be provided by the Funaddicts in Rydel High gymnasium. Willie’s famous fried chicken and bumbleberry crisp will be served. Please join us and we’ll have fun, fun, fun till daddy takes the T-Bird away. Reservations are required: $40 per person. Call the QCYC office for details.

Docks Committee
With Opening Day now past, a small group used the May work party to put us back together again. The temporary float needed some repairs and to be moved back to its storage location again. Some preparations for a reconfiguration of the junior club’s summer program floats was also done. The goal of this rearrangement is to make better and more reliable facilities available for the junior activities, to free up Work Float #1 and to free two slips for long term assignment without interfering with the junior activities. Big thanks to: Jim Mcfadden, Pete Collins, Pat Dore, Don Wilson, Ron Stevenson and Chuck Gould.
Advance work is underway for the big job of installing the required smoke vents in the flat roofs. Queen City Yacht Club has now received written notice of compliance with all provisions of Chapter 94 extensions to the Seattle Fire Code, except that the smoke vents are still outstanding. The club should be very proud of itself for stepping to the front of the pack in proactively working toward property protection advancements, to increase personnel safety for our members and guests and to give fire fighters adequate tools and a relatively safe working environment for them to fight for us in the event that we do suffer a fire. We’ve done a great deal to make their job possible here and to reduce our possible losses. We have done a very large job and it’s been planned, and executed with volunteer efforts. We do the word “volunteer” proud at Queen City! Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
The April 25 general meeting featured a presentation about this club’s status and efforts in regard to compliance with chapter 94, which is new fire code exclusively addressed to marina covered moorage, which was adopted as city ordinance in May of 2005. We’ll try to make that presentation more available to you. It answered a lot of your questions.
The safety ladders project is now well underway and a larger group of ladders is currently being fabricated and should be installed during this month. The project includes 280 ladders to be installed over the next four years time. Help on this project, including the formation of a team to carry on with it, is very much needed.
Problems on the docks? Report them to your dock captain. Don’t know one? Until we have that program fully functioning, please report problems to Captain Dick Dow, who has graciously volunteered to be a clearinghouse for these matters. That’s a huge burden off the chairman’s back and he is intensely grateful.
Come see what we are up to at one of our committee meetings: 6:00 PM, Tuesday, June 26, or July 24. Have some fun with us: 8:30 AM Saturday, June 9 and July 14. Our schedule is easy to follow. The second Saturday of every month is a marina work session, and the fourth Tuesday is committee meeting night.
