Bilge Pump: November 2008
Bilge Pump Issue: November 2008 I recently experienced an amazing event: the Queen City Yacht Club’s Commodore’s Ball. Simply stated, it was a milestone in my life. While this year’s Ball honored Susie and me, it really paid homage to all ninety-three Queen City Commodores that have preceded me.
It was a fantastic evening that was made possible by our immediate Past Commodore, Bill McGillin and his wife Cammy, and Captain Larry Dubia and Dorothy, along with the help of many members who volunteered countless hours to turn our clubhouse into the “Tour de France” for one magical evening. The effort showcased Queen City to the yacht clubs of the Grand Fourteen: they were taken aback by the affair. I’d like to thank our members who helped: Bob and Kathy Beckman, Chris and Sandy Benson, Jim Damery, Bill Field, Rebecca Garvie, Jan Gould, Sue Hanson, Jess Hill, Stephanie Marcelynas, Chris and Rich McCroskey, Scott and Tracy McPhee, Karin McLean, Carolyn Rolstad, Nadeane and Tim Rutledge, Carol Soffel, Shawn Stitch, Jill and Richard Thymian and our staff member, Jonelle Lind. Vice Commodore Ed Jennerich and Elaine and Rear Commodore George Austin and Nancy were gracious hosts. The last acknowledgement I need to make is to our members who attended the Ball. Thank you!
Congratulations are in order for the success of our Predicted Log Racers at Seattle Yacht Club’s Stimson race, and in particular, Captain Bill Anderson, who received the Latta Trophy for winning the Stimson .
Every year, a critical undertaking is done by the diligent members of our Planning and Finance Committee. One of their missions is to develop a budget that reconciles the Club’s revenues with operating expenses and capital expenditures. It’s never an easy process and this year’s wasn’t any different. It involved numerous long meetings, and eventually a budget that balances the desire to keep dues and moorage rates affordable, yet allowing the continuation of ongoing and necessary maintenance of our facilities, was hammered out and presented to the Board of Trustees for approval. Often taken for granted, yet critical in guiding our club, the Planning and Finance Committee consists of P/C Jeff Ewell (chair), Ron Dawson (outgoing chair), P/C Dean Lentgis, Gary Stone, Peter Anderson and Judith Pippin.
November will have some fun events, including the Tarettes’ Friday Night Social on the 7th, and a Scotch, Steak and Cigar night on the 21st, hosted by Captain Butch Scherrer and Nancy. Our Fleet Captain has scheduled a cruise to Kingston Cove Yacht Club for the Apple Cup over the weekend of November 22nd and 23rd. Be sure and mark your calendars for decorating the Clubhouse for Christmas on December 2nd, the Captain’s Dinner on the 4th, Special Peoples Cruise on the 7th and the Lighted Boat Parade on the 12th and 13th.
Susie and I hope that everyone has a great Thanksgiving holiday, and look forward to seeing you at some of the upcoming events.

Bilge Pump Issue: November 2008We have a busy and exciting year ahead. Commodore Roberts has planned a very active, fun-filled social calendar for us and, of course, we have a variety of maintenance projects to be completed.
Winslow: We are currently waiting final permitting before beginning the replacement of the transverse dock. Hopefully, by the time you read this we will be well on our way toward completion. We’re also in the very preliminary stages of investigating a little upgrading of our wonderful outstation. Under consideration are lighting upgrades, brighter interior paint, reinforcing of the deck, and, in conjunction with the Tarettes, the possible addition of a fireplace and flat screen TV. Stay tuned for reports as plans are finalized.
Main Station Docks: Capt. Dave Svendsen is coordinating the dock inspection project. This project is vital to the assessment of our docks and for organizing the work of Waterfront Construction in order to make best use of the available “window of opportunity” to complete the work. Inspection dates are Oct. 18 & 19; Oct. 25 & 26; Nov. 1 & 2; Nov. 8 & 9 beginning at 0830 and includes lunch. This is a great opportunity to help the Club in a very important project. Please come and spend a morning!
Capt. Art Mauldin is continuing to coordinate the docks electrical inspection project with a view to assessing and upgrading the system. Anyone with an interest in the project should contact Art.
Replacing the existing water line on Dock 1 is under the direction of Capt. Randy Garvie. We hope to have this project completed in the near future. Extra hands would make the project move ahead faster. Please contact Randy if you can help.
Moorage: With winter approaching and many folks leaving for warmer climes, please make sure you have clearly visible emergency contact information posted on the dock side of your boat. Hopefully, we won’t need to use it but we do need to be prepared. Also, please be sure to check your dock lines and make sure loose items are securely stowed. With our fall and winter windstorms we don’t want loose items damaging your property, other members’ property or the structures.
Moorage Chair, Richard Frisch, and his committee will be continuing with the always difficult issue of “inactive boats.” As difficult an issue as it is, it is necessary to enforce the rule in order to ensure that active members can expect moorage to become available in a timely manner. Active members are what make our Club viable and moorage is what attracts many to join the Club. So if your boat has been “inactive” the cure is to use your boat to cruise or to cruise to a Club function, maintain your boat in a seaworthy condition, or get involved with one of our committees. Our goal is to encourage active participation in Club activities by all members. It’s your Club.
House: Not unlike many of our garages, the Club is “acquiring” many items which are not Club property and which have outlived there usefulness. These items are going to be removed in the very near future. In the future, any items you wish to donate to the Club should be approved by the AAC prior to leaving them at the Club. As you may have observed, these items tend to end up in the former apartment, making it an unsightly depository. Since we are moving forward with plans to make this area into a conference room, excess items will need to be removed. The conference room plans are modest and do not involve any structural changes so as to maintain flexibility. This is valuable space and we need to use it effectively.
The Club has also purchased a wheel chair in case any of our members or guests are in need of special assistance. It is being stowed in the coat closet on Deck 2.
I’m excited about this year and look forward to constructively moving forward with our many projects. I’d encourage each of you to get involved in the Club’s activities, volunteer to help on a project or serve on a committee. If I can be of service, you can email me at vicecommodore@queencity.org. I’ll see you around the Club!
Fair Winds,
Ed Jennerich
Vice Commodore
Bilge Pump Issue: November 2008This has been a busy month. Nancy and I attended the junior officer’s (Rear and Vice Commodore) balls at Rainier and Tacoma. These are theme events and we dress up and have a party on Saturday evenings, then have a formal meeting on Sunday morning. Our group of Rear Commodores is called the Sassy Salmon. We are off to Bremerton on the 11th and Everett on the 25th for their J.O. Balls with their new Rear Commodores. We have a very diverse group of junior officers and some of the same concerns about how their clubs function have been discussed. I will let you know if any great ideas for our club pop up.
Grounds – We had a great turnout for the club cleanup on Sept. 27 and 64 captains and 1st mates clipped, cut, snipped, pulled, raked and swept our grounds. Linda Roehl had tools, flowers and a plan for our 3 hours, then Willie had a great lunch and we went home. In February we would like you all to come back. I know that where I was weeding there wasn’t much left so this next cleanup will be easier. Well done and thank you to all who participated.
Security – We have changed the lockdown time of the club to 12 PM to 5 AM unless there is a prior arrangement for an event. You all have your member cards and can access the clubhouse with that at any other time.
Membership – On the 8th of October we inducted three new members: Janet Stannard and spouse Bill, Dave Wheelon and spouse Debbi and Bill Weber. Guests with intent of membership were John Knickerbocker, Tom and Jessica Freeman. Chris Benson has taken the reins of membership and is charging ahead with the Boat Show planning and will be asking for help with manning the booth in four hour increments, please contact him about this. Don’t forget to ask your boating friends to join our club.

Communications: Monitor VHF Channel 9. Communications boat ( TBD ) will provide parade information concerning safety and navigation.
Entry Requirements: There are none. ALL BOATERS ARE WELCOME. Just decorate your boat, put on a happy face and join the parade. Each and every boat lends its own unique flavor to the spirit of Christmas.
Comment: The event was begun in 1941 by Captain Chet Gibson and is being carried on under the sponsor ship of Queen City Yacht Club. It is an opportunity for the area boaters to share their pastime with the community and is an event the shoreline viewers eagerly anticipate.
Note: The Montlake Bridge opens on request after 6:30 PM, so the sailboats should line up together for a common opening.
Parade Start: On both nights, boats will form up at the North end of Lake Union behind the lead boat, ( TBD ), near buoy C”13” by Gasworks Park. At 6:00 PM the flashing light will appear on the lead boat and the parade will begin. We will proceed counter clockwise around Lake Union, through Portage Bay, the Mountlake Cut and out into Lake Washington.
Decorations: Both sides of the boat should be decorated; lights should dominate the display. The audience is the people in the surrounding communities who enjoy the spectacular sight of the floating Christmas lights from shore.

As many of you know QCYC maintains a Reciprocal agreement with the "College Club Seattle." They recently sold their building but now have an agreement with the "Columbia Tower Club." That agreement will extend to the members of QCYC.
I recently was in touch with the management of the College Club Seattle, and they assured me that our members could use the Columbia Tower Club via our reciprocal; however we must follow the Columbia Tower Club "RULES.”
This is a temporary situation as, they do plan to open a new facility as soon as
they can. In the meantime if any QCYC member would like to go to the Columbia Tower Club we must follow the procedure that Peter Sparling, sent to me in his October 14th e-mail below.
The College Club phone #206 622-0624
If you have any questions please call me.
Ed Allison
Chairman, Yachting Facilities
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ed:
Reciprocal Members wishing to access the Columbia Tower Club (the facility College Club Members use while we wait out a new home) are required to first contact the College Club to let us know when the member intends to visit the CTC. Once we have that information we contact the CTC to gain their approval. We then contact the Reciprocal Member letting them know the CTC is expecting them. All charges are settled upon departure by credit card. This pretty much eliminates dropping in after office hours.
Reciprocal members who plan ahead when wishing to use their facility
have been well received. This agreement with the CTC is verbal and subject to
change. Their dress code requires a jacket (without tie is acceptable) in the main Dining Room for men, and the always mysterious "appropriate attire" for ladies. Their Lounge is a bit less formal with a restriction on denim, open collared shirts are acceptable. Parking is available in the building, however the CTC does not control the garage. If you park in the building, you pay as you leave. Expensive!
Ed, I wish I could say using our temporary home at the CTC is as informal and
welcoming as it was for Queen City members when we resided in the old College Club building. When we acquire our new club house we will look forward to once again greeting Queen City Members with open arms.
Peter

Bilge Pump Issue: November 2008
Bilge Pump Issue: November 2008At the time of this writing, 3 new members have been initiated into Queen City Yacht Club at the October 8th meeting. They are Captain Janet Stannard, sponsored by Captain Richard McGrew; Captain Dave Wheelon, sponsored by P/C Bob Yates; and Captain Bill Weber, sponsored by Captain Rick English. Congratulations and a warm QCYC welcome to all of our new members. Please plan on attending a future event or Friday Lunch soon and meet some the members of your new yacht club. Let's all keep a lookout for these folks and show them around. Many thanks to the sponsors!
QCYC Board of Trustees approved another Membership Sponsor Lottery for this year. All current members who are primary sponsors for a new applicant will be entered into a drawing for a CASH prize of $1,000.00! This is an exciting incentive, and a great reason to bring a friend into the Club.
We have memberships open. The current total is now 382 active members, 18 shy of our goal of 400. Keep the "heat” on new prospects you may be talking to, and, we will do our best to get them into the membership. Remember the number one reason people do not join organizations? That's right, no one asked them to!
We will be participating at this year’s Seattle Boat Show from January 23rd to February 1st. We will need about 40 volunteers to man the booth during the show. To encourage your participation, FREE boat show tickets will be provided to any member who signs up for a shift. We will also have an open house on February 21st after the show to invite the interested potential members to view our club.
If you have creative ideas, some of the elements we need to cover are: producing a PowerPoint presentation with photos and movies of Club activities, booth design and construction, and booth banner and/or signage. We also like the idea of selling some sort of unique item, reasonably priced, in the booth. Proceeds could go to the Junior Boating Camp, sponsorship of a disadvantaged child's camp fee, and creation of a QCYC Junior Yacht Club, or all three. Let's have some feedback on this one. Contact myself or Rear Commodore George Austin to help.
Keep Recruiting!
