Minutes of the Regular Meeting on April 9, 2008

CALL TO ORDER:  Commodore McGillin called the meeting to order in the Clubhouse at 1935 hours.

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE:  Vice-Commodore Roberts led the general membership in the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

SENIOR MEMBER RECOGNITION:  Rear-Commodore Jennerich recognized Captain Gary Stone as the senior member in attendance. 

SPECIAL PRESENTATION:  Regatta Power Chairman Bob Lindal introduced his SYC counterpart, Captain Gerry Johnson, and trophies for recent joint events were exchanged.

READING OF THE MINUTES:  Secretary Wood read the minutes of the previous meeting and they were approved as read.

CORRESPONDENCE:  None.

APPLICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP:  Applications for membership from Captains Julie Bakken and Vivian Johnson were read.

COMMODORE:  Commodore McGillin thanked all members, and especially new members, for their participation in Club events, including work parties.  He recounted the Day Island Commodore’s Ball, and called out the “Morano” Hotel in Tacoma as very nice accommodations.

The Commodore noted upcoming events – the April 11 Friday Night Social to be sponsored by the Tarettes, and the Tacoma Yacht Club Daffodil Festival, at which “No Court” will be the Club’s flag boat.

VICE-COMMODORE:  Vice Commodore Roberts thanked Captains Kelly Stocklin and Bill Conley for their work gathering information and quotes for replacement of the transverse dock at the Bainbridge Outstation.  He also thanked by name those who have worked on the main station docks in the recent past.

The Vice Commodore asked members to let him know if your slip will be available during Opening Week, and reminded all mooring members to photocopy ‘08 Washington Department of Licensing registration documents for the office files.

REAR-COMMODORE: Rear-Commodore Jennerich reported that each member will soon receive one (and only one) parking permit to display in their vehicle, which will allow access during Opening Week and the summer when parking is especially tight.  He thanked Vice Commodore Roberts and Captain Bob Lindal for their construction help and cedar siding donation, respectively, for the new dumpster enclosures.

TREASURER:  Treasurer John Rogers reported that moorage invoices have been mailed, and recounted events that led to the acquisition of a new printer in the office.  Property taxes have been paid, and the next major invoice is the $20+K Ganges lease.

FLEET CAPTAIN:  Fleet Captain Paul Grimm with assistance from his man-puppet P/C Scott Grimm described the upcoming summer cruise, scheduled for August 9-17 in the lower Gulf Islands.

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS

REGATTA POWER: Captain Bob Lindal reported results of the Gig Harbor Race, and noted that there are two more races after the Eagle Harbor event.  Also, there will be a class in the use of “Coastal Explorer” charting software on Wednesday, May 7.

OTHER REPORTS:

Captain Dick Geving reminded members of the April 26 Pride of Queen City work party scheduled for 8:30-noon.  A lunch will be served after the work party, along with dinner for those who participate.  Emails are the best way to inform the Opening Day crew of slip vacancies and needs.

Captain Gary Stone updated attendees on the 520 Committee’s work at two recent 6-hour meetings.  The Parkway Plan is now in the Washington DOT’s EIS.

Moorage Chairman P/C Scott Grimm asked members to use the web site to check their status on the moorage list;  Captain Richard Frisch keeps that site very current.  He noted that the club is looking for slips to sublet during the summer, and reminded members to monitor their email and phone as their assignments draw near.  Finally, he reported that a milfoil application was planned for the following weekend.

Outstation Boss Captain Barbara Wood thanked the 45 people who showed up for the annual Outstation Work Party, and recounted a number of the tasks completed.

Webmeister Captain Kyle Bixby reported that the new web site is deployed, and that members will now need to sign up with their own password.

Captain Chuck Gould, on behalf of RBAW, reported on recent activities in Olympia, including new laws protecting orcas.  He also reported that many Esso fuel docks in British Columbia are being closed, and that finfishing in the Strait of Georgia will be closed.

Captain Tom Youngs reported that a bulk discount gas purchase is being planned for end-April to mid-May at Newport Shores Marina.  The diesel situation is in flux.

OLD BUSINESS:  None.

NEW BUSINESS:  None.

RECEPTION: V/C Roberts again recognized Captain Gary Stone as the senior member in attendance and Captain Jim VanWagenen as the junior member in attendance.  46 members were present, and 3 Past Commodores were present and recognized. 

QUARTER POT: The ever-timid, shy, and bashful Barbara Stone pulled for Friday lunches and quarter pot.  Captains Gary Stone and Don Wilson won Friday lunches, and Captain Dick Geving won the quarter pot.

GOOD & WELFARE:  Was supplied by Captain Larry Dubia.

The meeting was adjourned at 2050 hours.
