Minutes of the Regular Meeting on March 26, 2008

CALL TO ORDER:  Commodore McGillin called the meeting to order in the Clubhouse at 1935 hours.

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE:  Vice-Commodore Roberts led the general membership in the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

OPENING DAY PRESENTATION:  P/C Dave Krows, Opening Day Chairman, introduced the Admiral, Vice Admiral, and Admiralette from Seattle Yacht Club’s “Three-Ring Circus” Opening Day event, who encouraged participation.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION:  Commodore Bill and Cammy McGillin presented a special gift to Kathy Fish, in recognition for her work in putting together this year’s Annual.

SENIOR MEMBER RECOGNITION:  Rear-Commodore Jennerich recognized P/C Al Smith as the senior member in attendance. 

READING OF THE MINUTES:  Secretary Wood read the minutes of the previous meeting and they were approved as read.

CORRESPONDENCE:  None.

APPLICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP:  None.

COMMODORE:  Commodore McGillin thanked the Seattle Yacht Club for their presentation, and reported on the Bridge’s fun Tuesday lunch group outing onboard “No Court.” 

The Commodore noted several upcoming events – the April 5-6 work party at the Bainbridge Outstation, the April 11 Friday Night Social to be sponsored by the Tarettes, and the Memorial Day event at the Outstation to be managed by Captain Peter and Kathleen Anderson.

Last, he reminded attendees to be sure and secure the facility in the evenings.

VICE-COMMODORE:  Vice Commodore Roberts noted the April 5-6 Work Party at the Bainbridge Outstation.  Because he was not going to be able to attend, he handed the Outstation Chairman a $20 bill to cover food expenses, and encouraged others who could not help in person to do likewise.

The Vice Commodore reported that the new ranges and freezer are installed at the Outstation, and they will be run for the first time under Captain Peter Anderson’s supervision next week.

Last, he asked members to continue to support the Ship’s Store.

REAR-COMMODORE: Rear-Commodore Jennerich reported that the April 26 Pride of Queen City work party will begin at 8:30 AM, and dinner will be served for those who participate.  The dumpster enclosure will be primed and painted as soon as the weather allows. 

The Rear Commodore asked those who will be out of their slips during Opening Day events to let him know, and stated that the parking lot passes will be mailed on April 10.  Last, he noted the May 31 Junior Officer’s Ball, the theme of which will be “Margaritaville.”

TREASURER:  Treasurer John Rogers reported that Club finances are sound, but suggested that it was only because he hadn’t paid the property taxes yet.

FLEET CAPTAIN:  Fleet Captain Paul Grimm summarized key events scheduled for Tacoma Yacht Club’s Daffodil event April 19-20. 

COMMITTEE REPORTS

REGATTA  POWER:  Captain Bob Lindal reported results of the Novice and Old Timer’s Race, in which Captain Dave Padgett placed 1st Overall and the Club won the Team Trophy.  The Eagle Harbor race is scheduled for 2-1/2 weeks out; observers are needed.  Also, there will be a class in the use of “Coastal Explorer” charting software on Wednesday, May 7.

CLUB MANAGER:  Captain Jess Hill summarized hours of Bar operation during Opening Week, and advised attendees that there will be a $1/drink surcharge Friday through Sunday. 

Raffle tickets at 50 cents apiece will be sold at major events all summer, and on “Closing Day” 12 winners will be chosen to put a tasteful plaque on the 12 new bar stools which have been ordered for the bar area.

Separately, Captain Hill suggested that a special “committee” be formed to “shepherd / oversee” events during the course of the year, to help those less familiar with the mechanics of putting on a large event.

OTHER REPORTS:

P/C Dave Krows, Opening Day Chairman, outlined events for the week, which begins in earnest on Wednesday.  On Sunday, April 20 at 3 PM there will be a dinner for those who will be helping during Opening Week.

Membership Chairman Mark LaFountaine reported that the Club has 368 active members, and introduced member-in-waiting Captain Don Palmer.  He also recognized by name those who have sponsored new members this year.

Captain Chuck Gould, on behalf of RBAW, asked members to contact their Senators to support the Clean Boating Act, which would exempt pleasure boats from some aspects of proposed discharge rules.

OLD BUSINESS:  None.

NEW BUSINESS:  None.

RECEPTION: V/C Roberts again recognized P/C Al Smith as the senior member in attendance and Captain Brook Kimes as the junior member in attendance.  47 members were present, and 6 Past Commodores were present and recognized. 

QUARTER POT: Lynette Richards pulled for Friday lunches and quarter pot.  Captains Steve Coughlin and Dave Padgett won Friday lunches, and Captain Brook Kimes won the quarter pot.

GOOD & WELFARE:  Was supplied by Captain Larry Dubia.

The meeting was adjourned at 2050 hours.
