MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF QUEEN CITY YACHT CLUB ON March 26, 2014

 
CALL TO ORDER:  Commodore Myers called the meeting to order in the Clubhouse at 1935 hours. 
 
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Vice-Commodore McGrew led the general membership in the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.
 
The Commodore asked for a moment of silence on behalf of the victims of the Oso disaster; following same, a Club donation jar was passed around to which Members contributed.
 
SENIOR MEMBER RECOGNITION:  Rear-Commodore Rogers recognized Captain Gordy Foote as the senior member in attendance.
 
READING OF THE MINUTES:  The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as amended, following a mistake noted by the Secretary, which was not really a mistake because the Secretary caught it.
 
CORRESPONDENCE:  None.
 
APPLICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP:  Applications for membership were read from Captains John and Denise Merle, Bernie Bills, Daniel Jackson, and Michael and Susan Burke, all of whom were present and recognized.
 
SPECIAL PRESENTATION:  Representatives from Seattle Yacht Club gave a presentation and encouraged participation in this year’s Opening Day events, the theme of which is “Toys Ahoy.”
 
INDUCTION CEREMONY:  Membership Chairman Chris Benson presided over the induction into the Club of Captains Brian & Karen Sill, Rita & Trevor Hart, John & Kate Smith, Mark & Nanette Baker, Craig Magnusson, and Mark Clinton.
 
COMMODORE:  Commodore Myers reported that the Club is looking for a replacement sound system – an acoustical engineer has confirmed that interference from a local TV transmitter is causing interference in the current system.  The Commodore publicly embarrassed his lovely wife Laurean by reporting that, during the raffle at the St. Patrick’s Day cruise, she traded a valuable $40 gift certificate for a heater that he had donated and hoped to get rid of.
 
Upcoming events he noted include the March 29 Blues, Brews, and BBQ event, the April 7 Board of Trustees meeting, Tacoma Yacht Club’s Daffodil event, the April 12-13 Outstation Work Party, the Saturday, April 19 Breakfast with the Bridge, and the April 26 Pride of Queen City work party.
 
Also, the Commodore reported that the electrical upgrade project was well underway, permits for the Dock 1 extension were still in the works, and that the Tarettes were in need of an Opening Day boat for the WIC officers.

VICE-COMMODORE:  Vice-Commodore McGrew reported that all three ice machines on the docks had been commissioned for the season, and the crowd cheered.
 
REAR-COMMODORE:  Rear-Commodore Rogers reported that details of the proposed “Intermediate Membership” category, targeted at those under 40 years of age, is in the Bilge Pump, and will be voted on by the Members soon.  Also, he noted a couple of car break-ins at the Main Station.
 
TREASURER:  Treasurer Gould reported that YTD the Club is $12K ahead of budget, primarily due to new members and the Tarette’s donation.
 
FLEET CHAPLAIN:  Fleet Chaplain Ken Klett conducted 8 Bell Ceremonies for Captains Cliff Stromdahl and Arlene Oberg.
 
FLEET CAPTAIN:  Fleet Captain Jess Hill reported that 20 boats, 60+ people, and one screw-up flag highlighted the St. Patrick’s Day cruise.  Reservations were closed for TYC’s Daffodil Event, and the last weekend in May there will be a stew cook-off at University Dock.  Reservations are advised for the Big Brothers Cruise at Bremerton Yacht Club, and the July 18-27 South Sound Cruise will require reservations for dock space.
 
COMMITTEE REPORTS
 
OPENING DAY:  Chairman Sandy Werner reported that key leaders are in place, but volunteers are still needed for some activities.  A pizza and beer volunteer party is scheduled for Sunday, April 6, and limited edition t-shirts will soon be available.
 
MEMBERSHIP:  Chairman Chris Benson thanked those who helped at the recent Open House, and reported that the Club currently has 358 Active with 17 Pending, 110 Life, and 9 Social Members.  With 25 more Members the Club will be at full membership.
 
OTHER REPORTS
 
Captain Chuck Gould, on behalf of the Docks Committee, invited attendees to the monthly meeting on the second Tuesday of the month and to the work parties on the second Saturday of the month.
 
Captain John Alving, on behalf of the Electrical Upgrade Committee, summarized work being done by the contractors.
 
Club Manager Andy Gerding asked all to help with security by being certain doors are locked, and to remember to bus your own tableware.
 
Captain Karin McLean reminded attendees of the Ray Huggins anchoring seminar scheduled for the April 23 meeting.
 
Captain Chris Castrow reported that nearly 100 reservations had been made already for the Blues, Brews, and BBQ event, which he predicted would be bigger than Opening Day!
 
Moorage Chairman Jeff Madera reported that recent slip assignments at the Main Station have resulted in two openings at the Outstation – 55’ and 38’ slips are available.  Also, he asked those who will be subletting their slips during the Summer to let him know.
 
OLD BUSINESS:  None.
 
NEW BUSINESS:  None.
 
RECEPTION: R/C Rogers again recognized Captain Gordy Foote as the senior member in attendance and Captain Walt Braithwaite as the Junior Member in attendance. An unknown number of Members signed in, and 2 Past Commodores were present and recognized. 
 
DOLLAR POT: Captain Joanie Preusser pulled for Friday lunches and the dollar pot.  Captains Nick Castrow and Ron Stevenson won Friday lunches, and Captain Gerald Fey won the dollar pot.
